Kitchari – Simple, Easy to Digest Cleansing Meal

Kitchari (pronounced kich-uh-ree) is the traditional cleansing food of Ayurveda. It is a simple dish made of mung beans and rice.

Ayurveda philosophy dates back as far as 5,000 years. Thousands of years before we knew anything about the mind-body connection!

Ayurveda rejects a disease-based mindset and emphasizes that we are self-healing beings who can maintain and regain good health by consuming healing foods and living a balanced lifestyle which is the principles and foundation of my coaching practice.

I love this comforting meal. It is simple, easy to digest, a complete source of protein cleanses the body and given to people who are ill or recovering from illness.

In fact, people will cleanse by only consuming kitchari. This simple meal will aid in the clearing toxins, strengthen the digestive and immune system, and help to restore balance and wellbeing.

Below is the link to the recipe I use with the addition of adding black mustard seeds (they’re warming and good for my vata constitution) and a stick of kombu (seaweed).

I add kombu when cooking all my grains and beans because it is a great way to add additional minerals. Discard it after cooking.

You can adjust the spice mix to suit your own needs – however, coriander, cumin, turmeric, and fennel are beneficial for all doshas.
